INAUGURATION CEREMONY
In the heart of the Cumbayá valley, the Sport InterSEK started with a big event to welcome over 250 national and international athletes participating in eight sports whose feelings of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation were evident. The delegations arrived at the campus of SEK Los Valles in Cumbayá on Monday, May 5th after spending a weekend in companion of their host families and visiting the town. So we asked them to share their experiences so far. Cordelia, a 13-year-old student from St. John's International School experienced adventure sports in a cloud forest like zip wiring and rafting, and after, she visited the iconic Ecuadorian monument: Mitad del Mundo. Natalie, a 15-year-old student from the IES Budapest International School, told us that she has big expectations for this event to meet new people, make friends and hopefully win. The encounters among all the students set a panorama of cultural diversity and collaboration in the halls of SEK Los Valles.
In the inauguration ceremony, we enjoyed the presence of special guests like ambassadors from Hungary and Italy, the heads of SEK Guayaquil and SEK Ecuador, and well-known Ecuadorian athletes, among others. The ceremony began by introducing the members of the 15 delegations and their representatives wearing the traditional clothing of their home nations. Later on, the official mascot of the InterSEK, the spectacled bear Ukuri, danced and cheered up the audience performing joyful dances. After hearing the opening speeches pronounced by our headmaster, the vice president of the SEK Institution, as well as carrying out an oath by the athletes, the Sport InterSEK 2019 was inaugurated lighting up the Olympic Flame. Understanding that we all belong to a big international community, the expectations for this week are set for all hosts and competitors: to bear the name of SEK/IES to the highest regard.
DRAW OF GROUPS OF THE INTERSEK
This morning was carried out the draw of groups of sports InterSEK 2019. The keys were integrated in the following way:
THE GENERAL DIRECTOR SPEAKS ABOUT THE SPORT INTERSEK IN LA RADIO REDONDA
Mauricio Gomez, SEK los Valles General Director, was interviewed in Amanecer Deportivo radio programme which is part of La Radio Redonda, a sports station in Quito, Ecuador.
On this interview he commented about the Sport interSEK which will meet more than 200 SEK/IES students in our school. For almost 60 minutes Mauricio Gomez shared information about the schools that will take part of it, the sports that will be played, the recreational activities to be done and the great opportunity our students have in order to fraternize during this time.
UKURI
On Monday, May 6th, 2019 the most prestigious inter-school sporting event will begin at Sek-Los Valles International School whose facilities are located in the heart of the Cumbayá valley. For this event, a contest to select its mascot took place and all the students from first grade to senior year participated with a great enthusiasm, displaying their best creative ideas at the time of generating the design of the mascot.
Surprisingly, the judges’ verdict pointed out my design as the best one, so I was the winner (Julián Valencia). Even though I made a great effort to create the bear, I thought somebody else had won. My design is a spectacled bear, named Ukuri.
The name “Ukuri” comes from the Quechua word “Ukumari”, which means bear with glasses. I chose to draw one of the most emblematic species of mammals from Ecuador, specifically from the Andes Mountain region, due to the fact that this bear species is in critical danger of extinction. My drawing won because I trusted and believed in nature, it inspired me to make Ukuri.
